Panasonic Lumix DC-FT7

The Panasonic Lumix DC-TS7 (known as the FT7 outside of North America) is the first compact rugged camera to feature an electronic viewfinder (as of May 2018). The camera is waterproof to 31m/102ft, shockproof to 2m/6.6ft, pressure resistant to 100kgf/220lbf and freezeproof to 10°C/-14°F. It pairs a 20.4MP BSI-CMOS with a optically stabilized 28-128mm equivalent F3.3-5.9 lens. The main attraction is a 0.2" electronic viewfinder with 1.17M-dot equivalent viewfinder for shooting outdoors. There's also a 3" LCD display with 1.04 milliion dots. The camera can record 4K video at 24p or 30p and has a high speed 120 fps mode, albeit at 1280 x 720. Wi-Fi is built in, though the TS7 doesn't offer Bluetooth like many other modern Panasonic cameras. Battery life in rated at a respectable 300 shots per charge.

The Panasonic Lumix FT7 is the company’s latest rugged waterproof compact. It’s a major upgrade to the five year old (and now discontinued) Lumix FT5  with an updated 20.4 Megapixel sensor and a stabilised 4.6x zoom with a range of 28-128mm.

Also new is a built-in 1,170k dot electronic viewfinder and the 3 inch LCD screen has an increased resolution of 1040k dots, compared with 460k dots on the FT5. The FT7 is waterproof to a depth of 31m – that’s deeper than any other waterproof compact – can be dropped from a height of 2 metres and subjected to a force of 100kgf with no ill effects. It’ll function in temperatures down to -10C.

Like other high-end Lumix compacts, it can shoot 4k video and also benefits from Panasonic’s 4K shooting modes that allow you to shoot a 30fps burst of photos at 8 Megapixel resolution. There’s Wifi, allowing you to connect to your phone to download images and shoot remotely. Unlike the earlier Lumix FT5 , there’s no built-in GPS, but you can tag images with positional data from your phone’s GPS.

A built in height/depth sensor and compass complete the picture and you can charge the FT7 via it’s USB connector from any suitable power source. In my final review, find out if the FT7 is the best waterproof rugged camera for you!
